An oxygen concentrator is a machine, which separates the oxygen from the other gases in the surrounding air.
The air around us is made up of several different gases:78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases. The concentrator draws in air and separates the oxygen from the other gases using a filter system. This filter traps some gases and allows the oxygen to pass through. The oxygen can then be delivered via tubing to cannula for you to breathe. Other people in the room will still be breathing normal amounts of oxygen.
The concentrator plugs into the mains and uses around 350 watts of power (about the same as four 100 watt light bulbs). It makes a humming noise, a bit like the sound of a fridge, which you will soon get used to. It is approx 72cm high x 40cm wide x 36cm deep or 28.5" high x 15.7" wide x 14.5" deep.
The Vitalair oxygen concentrator will provide a constant source of oxygen, 24 hours per day, everyday of the year. Our Patient Service Representative (PSR) will visit every six months to carry out regular maintenance checks on the oxygen concentrators.
