Long Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOT)

Long Term Oxygen Therapy relates to the provision of oxygen therapy for continuous use at home for patients with chronic hypoxaemia (PaO2 at or below 7.3kPa (55mg). The oxygen flow rate must be sufficient to raise the waking oxygen tension above 8 KPa, (60mmHg).

Clincians usually prescribe LTOT where this is needed for at least 15 hours per day. For children this may cover 24 hours per day, but often apply to sleeping periods only.

Ambulatory oxygen may also be indicated in patients on LTOT to facilitate their mobility and quality of life.
